FamilyNest Finance is committed to providing accurate, honest, and helpful financial information for American families. This editorial policy describes how we create content, who reviews it, how we handle errors, and how we ensure our commercial relationships never compromise our editorial integrity.

Our editorial mission

Our mission is to make personal finance accessible and actionable for families with children. Every piece of content we publish is evaluated against one question: does this genuinely help a parent make a better financial decision?

We are not a news organization. We do not publish breaking news or market commentary. We focus on evergreen, practical guidance — budgeting, saving, insurance, college planning — that remains relevant over time and is regularly reviewed for accuracy.

Who creates our content

Content writers

Our writers specialize in personal finance, with particular focus on family budgeting, insurance, savings, and college planning. All writers are required to cite primary sources for all factual claims.

Financial reviewers

All guides, comparison pages, and calculator methodology pages are reviewed by a certified financial planner (CFP) before publication. The reviewer's credentials are disclosed on each reviewed page.

Editorial team

Our editorial team sets standards, approves content before publication, and conducts regular content audits. The editorial team operates independently from our commercial and advertising teams.

How we research and source content

📊
Primary sources only. We source data from government agencies (BLS, USDA, IRS, Federal Reserve), peer-reviewed academic research, and industry bodies. We do not use other personal finance blogs as sources.
🔗
All claims are linked. Every statistic, data point, and factual claim links to its original source. If we cannot find a reliable source for a claim, we do not publish it.
🧮
Calculator methodology is disclosed. For every calculator on FamilyNest Finance, we publish a methodology section explaining the data sources, assumptions, and formulas used. We acknowledge limitations clearly.
🏷️
Opinions are clearly labeled. When we express an editorial opinion — such as "we think X is the best option for most families" — we label it as such and explain our reasoning.

Product reviews and comparisons

When we review or compare financial products — credit cards, savings accounts, insurance policies, budgeting apps — we follow this process:

  1. Independent research. We research products using publicly available information, product disclosures, and terms of service. We do not rely solely on information provided by the product company.
  2. Standardized criteria. We evaluate products against a consistent set of criteria relevant to families — fees, interest rates, customer service, ease of use, and suitability for different financial situations.
  3. Commercial relationships are disclosed. If we have an affiliate relationship with a product we review, this is disclosed at the top of the page. Having an affiliate relationship does not influence our rating or ranking.
  4. Non-partner products are included. We regularly include products we have no commercial relationship with — including when they score better than products we do earn commissions from.
  5. Ratings are our own. Our star ratings, "best for" labels, and editorial recommendations reflect our genuine assessment. They are not purchased or negotiated.

Editorial independence from advertising

FamilyNest Finance earns revenue through affiliate commissions. This creates a potential conflict of interest that we manage through structural separation and explicit policies.

✓ What our commercial team can do
  • Negotiate commission rates with affiliate partners
  • Add new affiliate partners to existing content
  • Report on content performance to partners
✗ What our commercial team cannot do
  • Determine editorial rankings or ratings
  • Request changes to editorial content
  • Approve or reject content based on commercial relationships
  • Create content without editorial team oversight

Content updates and freshness

Financial information changes frequently — interest rates, insurance premiums, tax rules, and product availability all shift over time. We maintain content accuracy through:

Monthly
Top 20 most-read pages reviewed for accuracy. Interest rates, fees, and product availability updated.
Quarterly
Full site audit. All calculator data sources verified. Outdated statistics replaced with current figures.
Annually
Complete editorial review of all evergreen content. Tax limits, contribution limits, and regulatory changes incorporated.
As needed
Breaking regulatory changes, significant product changes, or reader-reported errors addressed immediately.

Every page displays a "Last updated" date so readers know when information was last verified.

Corrections policy

We take accuracy seriously. When we make errors, we correct them promptly and transparently.

Minor errors (typos, broken links, outdated figures) are corrected within 24 hours of identification without a formal correction notice.
📝
Factual errors that could affect a reader's financial decision are corrected immediately and noted with an inline correction notice: "Correction [date]: This article has been updated to reflect..."
📬
To report an error, email us at hello@familynestfinance.com with the page URL and a description of the error. We review all correction requests within one business day.

Use of AI in content creation

FamilyNest Finance uses AI tools to assist in research, drafting, and editing content. We disclose this practice here in the interest of transparency.

All AI-assisted content is reviewed, edited, and approved by a human editor before publication. AI tools are used to:

  • Research and summarize source material
  • Draft initial content structures
  • Check grammar and readability

AI tools are not used to generate financial recommendations without human review, create fake testimonials or data, or replace expert CFP review on financial content.
